INTRINSIC MOTIVATION

Intrinsic motivation refers to a spontaneous tendency to be curious and interested, to seek out challenges, and to exercise and develop skills and knowledge, without the requirement for extrinsic rewards. Four decades of experimental and field research have found intrinsic motivation to predict enhanced learning, performance, creativity, optimal development, and psychological wellness.

In our experience, intrinsic motivation can help to address many challenges faced by the Indian education system. Through promoting strong role-modelling and trusting relationships at every level, we’ve shown that teachers and education officials can be intrinsically motivated to support children to realise improvements in learning.

Intrinsic motivation is based on three key pillars:

Autonomy

The desire to direct our own lives.

mastery

The desire to continually improve.

Purpose

The desire to do something that matters.
